We're thinking Summer has finally Arrived! Now it's all about Watering,Mulching, Fertilizing, and perhaps a new plant or 2! - Pay special attention to anything newly planted when you are watering, the drastic change in temperatures can take as much toll on your plants than the actual heat itself.
- Watering in the evening is best - it gives your plants all night and through the morning to soak up that water and acclimate.
- Water deeply every few days to encourage roots to go deep in your soil, watering a little every day encourages the roots to grow shallowly and makes them more vulnerable during periods of extreme heat or drought.
- The exception to this is Hanging Baskets and Potted Containers, these should be watered or at least checked daily. Water slowly until water runs out of the drainage holes.
My favorite Watering Tools right now are the Dramm manual twist Timers and the old Gilmore Stick Fan Sprinklers. I love the Timers because if I don't finish my watering before I leaves I can set it and leave and it will shut off itself ( you just have to remember to turn off the spicket when you get home!). The Stick Fan Spray Sprinklers spray 180degrees in a half circle strip! Perfect for odd corners or long borders when you really would like to just water just your beds, they are also cheap less than $5 so you can have several arounI like them because I can water my beds without the lawn! Mulching conserves moisture and reduces watering, simple as that! Bark, Compost, Cocoa Mulch, whichever pleases you. The more you Mulch the less weeding and watering you will be doing this summer. With all this Watering, don't forget to Fertilize! Annuals & Veggies are verocious feeders, many times plant poop out early simply because they were hungry! Veggies have been doing alot of work underground and many are setting fruit, fertilize to ensure your harvest! Again pay special attention to anything in a basket or container, with the increased watering nutrients flush out faster and need to be fertilized more often. |
